One of the best things about summer camping is the food. And there is no better thing to do when out in the woods than to break out the BBQ in the great outdoors.

But just like BBQ at home, grilling food in the wilderness takes a good degree of preparation and planning. In fact, there’s a lot you can do even before you pack up your camping gear. The more you do at home, the more time you can spend enjoying your camping experience. So keep some of these basic grilling tips in mind the next time you go venture out into the woods to be closer to nature.

It’s always important to keep your food safe in a cooler to prevent bacterial growth. This is essential in the woods because if your food spoils in the first few days you won’t have many options to replace it. The handiest thing to cook with when camping is a charcoal barbeque that can accommodate coals and wood. If you have a car you can afford to bring along a larger model to get some really great grilling flavor. You can even use the wood you find on the ground to create some great smoky flavor inside your BBQ. There are many charcoal barbeques on the market that are both portable and powerful. Of course you can also go with a gas BBQ, but keep in mind you’ll have to bring along adequate fuel.

When it comes to camping BBQ, you’ll want to stay as organized as possible. So that means laying out all your equipment beforehand. In case of flare ups you should always have a water bottle next to the grill. You can also use it if you find the smoke from your fire is getting too dark and wandering into other campsites. If you marinade your meat beforehand you can freeze it until you need to use it. This will leave you free to concentrate on building the fire itself. Evidently, great BBQ while camping is all about anticipating your needs and adapting to outdoor conditions.
