If you’re looking to add some green to your lawn, you may be confused about which type of grass you should plant. There are lots of different kinds, but Bermuda Grass is a particularly popular type, as it has lots of advantages. It is very hardy and resistant to all kinds of environmental harshness. It can thrive in full sun, can tolerate extensive drought, and deals just fine with salty soils.

Considering the fact that it is not native to North America, it fares very well over here. You should know, however, that even within this type, there are several different varieties, each with their unique features. Which one is right for you depends on your situation.

Common Bermuda Grass

The common type is the most popular variety. It has a a little bit of everything. It can grow quickly, is fairly dense and can be taken care of easily. You can easily find seeds for this type all over the place, and they are pretty cheap too.

Medium Grass

These types are middle of the road varieties. They are great for large areas that get mowed very frequently, including football fields and golf courses. These types come as seeds or sods.

Cold Tolerant Types

Recently, there have been new types of Bermuda Grass developed that can take a lot more cold than conventional strains. With the common type, winter kills often occur in transition zones. Some examples of these more tolerant varieties are La Prima and Mohawk.

Improved Common Types

Some have selectively grown variants of the common type that improve specific features. A common trait of these is that their root systems go deeper, and they are denser than the traditional common variety. The quality of these improved strains lies between the regular common and the hybrids.

Some examples:

• The Mohawk type has particularly good cold tolerance, shown to continue living in conditions as cold as -6.75 degrees Celsius. It is well adapted to the northern transition zone in the US.
• Sahara is another type, and it is quite well adapted to heavy drought. It also has great pest resistance, as well as being sturdy and durable.

Clearly, not all types are created equal. Some are not appropriate for certain areas. With all the specializations, it should be easy to narrow down what type you need to get.
