There are many types of solar lights to suit just about any outdoor lighting need. Many people like to use solar lights because they offer a convenience when it comes to installing the lights. It doesn’t hurt that the light produced by the lamps are not creating any additional cost to their electrical bill. The eco-friendliness of employing a renewable energy source to light your yard, garden or patio will probably provide a boost in your conscious as well.

The first type is known as accent lights which do not burn very bright but offer a gentle glow that is used mostly for decorative purposes. These solar lights can actually provide light for two nights with a single day’s charge because of the dim lamp. Solar accent lights make for great solar patio lighting where they serve as complements to brighter sources of functional lighting.

When you need brighter levels for purposes such as pathways, steps or driveways there are solar pathway lights to do the job. These models often come on a post or stake and are often labeled as solar post lights for this reason. Post lights are simply solar lights that are attached to a stake or post and these are probably the most common design you will find in the outdoor and patio section of large retailers like Wal-Mart. By sitting on a post, installation is very easy. Simply push the stake into the ground where you wish to install the light and be sure that the solar panel will receive enough direct sun light during the day.

For more specific purposes, there are also solar task lights or spot lights. These can be used as part of your garden design such as illuminating a statue, flags or other objects you wish to draw attention to. While these products cannot produce the same brightness as traditional incandescent lamps wired to a power source, some top models can produce the equivalent of a 40 watt incandescent bulb which is not bad considering it is free electricity.
