Blood testing is a confidential laboratory procedure done by a medical professional usually performed by extracting blood from a vein in the arm or from pricking a person’s finger. After extracting the blood it is then sent to a laboratory for results.

These tests can be and are used to determine many things about a person including but not limited to drug use, disease detection, STD testing, monitoring the levels of vitamins and minerals in the body, organ function, etc. Lab test results depend on the type of test being conducted and depending on this can take anywhere from a half an hour to a few weeks to process.

Confidentiality is so important in this type of matter. Most places will not even allow you to get your test results over the phone, you must come back to the place where you were tested or put in a request that a letter be sent to you in the mail disclosing results.

Some of the other most common reasons for completing some blood testing is to check for things such as diabetes, kidney disease, allergies, cancer detection, gastrointestinal diseases, and thyroid disease. Getting tested regularly in hopes of early detection could be a matter of life or death in some health cases.

There are many people out there who do not know their blood type. If and when a person gives blood they will be told what blood type they are. Donating blood is one of the most selfless and helpful things a person can do, however it is not for everyone. Some people get queasy and pass out, others get really nauseous. When considering getting a test done it is important to prepare for it. Each test can have different rules to follow. For instance some require a person to not eat or drink for a certain amount of time, while others require them to not smoke or take any medications beforehand. Failure to abide by these rules could possibly jeopardize the test results accuracy. This is why it is always a good idea to arrive at the site where the blood tests are being conducted early so that one can ask questions or get familiarized with everything and discuss things such as family medical history etc.
