Buying and Selling Collectibles Online
I have spent a lot of time over the past few years browsing through the various categories of eBay. What started out as a way to make some extra money, grew into a bit of an obsession as I searched and searched for items that sold well on the site.
After the first couple of months I could see clearly that my focus should be on the collectibles category. If you have ever looked at eBay closely, you probably know that the category of collectibles is quite substantial. If somebody collects it, somewhere in the world, you can probably find an example of it listed on the auction giant.
As I learned more and more about the items that sell on eBay, I started to keep track of them in a spreadsheet. It was very interesting to me to see how to things that look so similar could bring very different results when put up for auction. A very good example of this is vintage postcards. There are some that will bring hundreds of dollars. Others, that to the untrained eye look very similar, will not sell even when offered for just a dollar.
Another area where collectors are very particular is small knickknack type items that can be found around the house. I once purchased a large lot of vintage salt and pepper shakers thinking that I had found a potential gold mine. I thought this because I had seen several of the old kitchen accessories selling well during one of my visits to eBay. It turned out that the collection I had purchased was not worth all that much after all. Many of the buyers are very specialized in what they collect. Now, before I purchase any large lots at estate sales or yard sales, I try to do a little bit of research. Keeping a notebook of what I have found online makes it much easier for me when I go out looking for items to sell.
Another type of collectible that I found a market for is vintage sporting goods. This however, it is another area where collectors often specialize. You may find vintage baseball gloves at yard sales that will sell very well on eBay. You run the risk however, of listing them and finding that there is no particular interest in that style of glove during the time you have it listed.
If you’re interested in starting to sell on eBay, one of the best things you can do is began by selling old collectibles. It takes a little bit of practice however, and you would serve yourself well to do a bit of research before you spend money on what will become your inventory.
