Have you ever had to file a car insurance claim? Many people do not even know what a claim is, let alone how to file one. Since accidents happen every single day, it is a very good idea to have some general knowledge about how claims work and how you can file one if you get into an accident.

In order to be able to file a claim though, you must first be signed up for an auto insurance policy. Once you are signed up, most insurers will let you file a claim directly on their website. Usually, the process of filing a claim involves you going to the website of your insurer and clicking on a tab that says “claims” or something similar.

If you choose to file a claim online, there will usually be a very detailed report that you will need to fill out regarding your accident or damages. They will ask for information such as: date of the accident, the type of car that you drive, estimated amount of damage, and they will have an area available for you to write a brief description about what happened. Usually, they will also need to have some additional information such as: your driver’s license number as well as information about other drivers that were involved in the accident.

After the claim report is filed, law enforcement may be able to verify some of the information along with witnesses. Then, the type of coverage that you purchased (e.g. comprehensive car insurance) will be factored into the claim. If you have comprehensive insurance, you will probably get more money for your claim than you would with a minimal policy. It will usually take a few weeks for you to get your auto insurance claim processed and may take longer for you to get reimbursed depending on the scenario.
