When organizing and storing your belongings, being able to see your items can really help. Recently, I decided I needed to get my home in order. This involved a large project of cleaning and organizing. I started with my basement, which is where most of my stuff is stored, and worked my way up and out into my garage. I am involved in way too many hobbies. All of these hobbies have an assortment of gear and items that I have accumulated over time. Some things need to be replaced. But most of my stuff just needed to be organized and stored away for later use.

The right storage option was an important choice for me. I did a lot of research into storage units. I browsed online and at stores. I was very surprised with the wide variety of plastic storage boxes available. Some were built like tanks. Others were collapsible. There were many different colors to choose from, which could be handy if you decided you wanted to color code your gear. The storage option that I decided to implement were stackable, snap on lid, clear plastic storage boxes.

I started out buying a couple boxes to test their durability and usefulness. I took them home and started with one hobby’s gear. The boxes were 30 gallons each, so they each held a considerable amount of stuff. It took me two full boxes to store all the items from one category. I labeled the outside with its contents, and stacked them in my basement. They were easy to move (albeit heavy), and stacked well.

So I returned to the store to purchase more. I was ultimately able to store all my gear in a lot less boxes than I had anticipated. I was very surprised in the small amount of space these boxes took up once full, because of their stack-ability. Because the boxes I went with are clear, I can get a general idea of their contents before I need to pull one out. This can save your back when each box weighs 50+ pounds.
