Read on to find out what is the difference between the supercharger and the turbocharger. Keep in mind that the power supply is the main difference between both chargers.
Superchargers and turbochargers both use a type of forced induction system. This system is placed on the cars engine to produce and give the car more horsepower. In other words, the superchargers and the turbochargers increase the speed of the car. However, superchargers and turbochargers are installed differently on the engine. Turbochargers are a little more expensive to maintain than superchargers and superchargers require very little money to keep them working properly.
Superchargers work the same way your water pump and alternator do versus a turbocharger which get its power from the car’s exhaust system. Both the supercharger and the turbocharger can be placed on almost any engine. The supercharger comes in a kit and it is fan belt driven. Turbochargers have to be sized according to the engine type and are mostly found on large diesel engines and they force more air in to the cylinders to increase the engine’s power. It takes about 6-7 hours to install superchargers and you do not have to weld and attach parts to the engine. Turbochargers are smaller and you do not need belts. A supercharger has its own oil supply and needs belts to operate.
Turbochargers have more power than the superchargers. You should also know that superchargers are easier to install and are more expensive than the turbochargers. The turbocharger is more efficient because it uses the waste product from the car exhaust system – the blowing of the exhaust – to power its fan. The downside is that turbochargers will produce more heat and increase the weight of the engine.
Superchargers will not increase the use of oil as much as turbochargers since turbo constantly uses oil at a very high rate. The MPG per gallon is better when using superchargers because you do not have to drive the car at full throttle.
As you can see, there are many differences. Maybe more than you thought. Part of your decision will come down to price and easy of installation. Either way, you’ll have a faster moving car!
