One of the ways we could save money in these difficult times is find a cheaper way to get around. Although our vehicles are essential for long trips or carrying goods if you spend time moving around the local neighborhood one way to save some money could be to use a power scooter. These are much more sophisticated than the scooters you may remember from your childhood and are powered today by either an electric or a small gas motor.

Two very popular makes of these types of scooters are the razor electric scooter range and Go-Ped gas scooters. Electric scooter come with motors of various performance levels, from smaller less powerful motors that are suitable for kids to more powerful, faster moving scooters that would suit an adult. Gas scooters are not really designed for children but are much more powerful with higher top speeds and are perfect for more responsible teenagers and adults.

Let’s look at the advantages and disadvantages of these two types of scooters. If we are looking for a scooter for a child, a Razor electric scooter would be the best choice. Top speeds of electric scooters range for around ten to fifteen miles per hour. Look carefully at the top speed if you’re child has never used one of these scooters before as you don’t want to give a child a scooter that he can’t cope with.

A good example that would be suitable for a younger child is the Razor E100 which costs less than $100 and can reach around ten mph. This scooter would be fine for a child of about eight years old. For a slightly older, more experienced child the Razor E300 with a top speed of fifteen mph, costing around $200 would be a good choice.

Both of these models have a rear brake operated by a lever on the handlebars and comfortable, ten inch wide pneumatic tires.

For adults look at the range of Go-Ped gas scooters. these are more expensive than the electric scooters but have higher top speeds of up to thirty mph and cost from around $500. The single cylinder 2-stroke engine is economical and they have both a braking system that uses both front and rear brakes.

Whichever type of scooter you use you need to check out any laws in your area as these can vary. One thing they all have in common however is the requirement to wear a safety helmet. It is also a very good idea to wear other safety gear such as knee and arm pads and good, thick pants and jacket.
