The Pros and Cons of Fake Security Cameras

Written by stephenh | Posted in Home Improvement |

Home security is a big concern to many of us. Nobody wants to have a beautiful home full of valuable personal belongings threatened by the prospect of theft or vandalism. The fact that any would-be criminal can personally violate our personal space without fear of consequence is scary.

Anybody who has experienced a theft or vandalism of their home or personal property can likely relate to what I mean. Have you ever had anybody break into your home while you were away? Maybe you were once the victim of a car burglary in the middle of the night. If you have experienced either of these situations, or a myriad of other similar occurrences, or you were afraid you might, a fake security camera can help ease the burden a little.

Perhaps you have thought about getting a real security camera system installed in your home, but were scared off due to the expense. Not only can a simple camera system cost you well in excess of $500 just for the equipment, but unless you are prepared to spend a lot of time and energy trying to install it, you will likely have to pay someone else to do it for you. Depending on the system you’re trying to install, this can add to the expense significantly.

Imitation security cameras have their benefits and limitations. The benefits are that they are very inexpensive and extremely easy to install. An imitation camera can cost as little as seven dollars, with the most realistic models averaging around $40-$60. Installation usually requires no more than finding a suitable place to mount them, and securing them with a couple of screws.

One of the obvious disadvantages to these types of cameras is the fact that they are not real. While having the appearance of the camera is a great deterrent to crime, in the instances when the camera is either not seen or the perpetrator does not care that they may be caught on video, an imitation camera will offer no benefit. If however, care is taken to make sure that they are installed in a visible location, not seeing the camera is a fairly rare occurrence. Depending on the neighborhood that you live in, finding a would-be criminal who does not care that camera is staring at them, and watching their every move, is even more rare.

Some of you may be concerned that fake security cameras look fake, and therefore are useless as a deterrent, let me ease your mind. While the least expensive cameras may not look as real as you would like, once you get into a $20-$40 range, they look extremely real. Most of these also come with LED lights and motion sensors that would convince even the most skeptical observer that they are authentic.
