There are times when the public school system may not be the best environment for learning for everyone. Some students just cannot seem to learn up to their potential in a public school setting. Quitting school without a reasonable alternative is not a great solution.

Homeschooling is one option but at least one parent must be willing to take on the role of teacher. Unschooling is a great option as well, but a lot of parents do not agree. Another option that makes sense is an online school. The typical high school classes are taught through lessons over the internet. Students get the equivalent of a high school education quickly and efficiently. The quality of learning may not be quite up to the level of traditional homeschooling but a student can complete all the necessary requirements to effectively graduate from high school.

After the courses are completed, the student will receive a document that is the equivalent to a diploma as long as the online school chosen is accredited. A diploma from a properly accredited online high school will be accepted by any employer or college without a problem.

All online schools on this list are government funded, offer lessons to residents of the state and conduct all classes online exclusively. Suitable schools may be private institutions that are funded by the government, public schools that operate statewide or charter schools.

There is an age requirement for some of these schools but not for others. With enough time invested it is possible to complete the entire high school program within a couple of years. Since students work at their own pace, they can choose to get through the courses quicker than they would by going to a traditional high school.
