One of the great things about an FRS radio is that it has a longer range than most of the walkie talkies that people grew up with. And if you can afford to get a long range walkie talkie, it would be better for you to go for that option. You may not think that you need the extra range, but you don’t really know what tasks you’ll be using the radio for in the future.

Now, of course, the exact range of the radio will depend on the environment you find yourself in. In an ideal area, where there are no obstacles or obstructions, you might be able to get up to two miles of radio coverage. When things are less than ideal though, you might end up with a range of a quarter mile to one mile.

So again, don’t settle for something with a shorter range. You might think that you’ll only be using it around the house, to keep tabs on the kids, but maybe you’ll find that one of these days, you’ll end up bringing the radios to the park, where the distances are much larger. You might think you’ll only use the radios in the office, but then you’ll find that they may come in handy when you’re out in the field, or traveling somewhere on a business trip.

So the message here is that if your budget allows for longer range devices, then go for them. Give yourself the extra flexibility which comes with an FRS radio, and that will allow you to stay in touch over much longer distances than other devices. That’s way, when the need actually arises for a longer range communications option you’re ready to go. There won’t need to be some last minute scramble to spend even more money, on additional or extra devices which will meet that new or future need.
