Right now, there are two methods which are most in use at the moment. Screen Printing – Screen printing involves a stencil that is placed over a woven mesh. This stencil is the outline of the design, and works to block ink from passing through the mesh. Some areas of the stencil are left open, and it is through this area where the ink can pass through and can be transferred to the cloth. The screens are pressed to the fabric, and a roller or squeegee is moved across the stencil which forces the ink out. Screens are pressed to the fabric, one color per screen.

Advantages of this method include high quality and durability. The print rarely fades with washing. Cracking and peeling is also minimized. Disadvantages of this method include the cost and the complicated procedure. Since each screen holds a different color, this type of printing isn’t very suitable for complicated color schemes. Screen printing is also not so feasible with complicated designs, and it needs to have a large order of shirts in order to be profitable.

This type of printing is best for designs printed in large numbers and mass production. It is also used with personalized kids t shirts.

Heat/ Laser / Inkjet Transfer – This method utilizes the process of transferring ink to a transfer paper, then transferring the design onto the shirt by means of heat and pressure.

An advantage of this type of printing is that it is relatively easy to do. It is great for complex designs with many color schemes. Single orders can be accommodated thus it is great for small orders. Disadvantages include fragility of prints. In fact, prints can fade and crack easily, and it is not possible to print on dark shirts by using this method.
