Have Fun On Jump Bikes
Chances are you have seen videos of people dirt jumping somewhere. There are plenty of them available for your viewing pleasure on YouTube. Did you know that almost any kind of bike available can be used to do these tricks? Even mountain bikes and your typical racing bikes can be slightly modified to adequately jump on dirt. BMX bikes remain the standard for this type of activity but virtually any other kind of bike will do if you keep a few things in mind.
Jump bikes are highly modified and designed specifically to do tricks on dirt. The lower seat lets the rider perform in comfort without worrying about the seat post being in the way. The wheels and frame are extremely rugged in preparation of handling the forces involved with even the most daring vertical stunts. A lightweight design is important for hang time and flight but the frame needs to be strong enough to withstand the abuse that comes with the repeated landings. The rider has better than average control thanks to a front suspension that makes the bike more responsive.
A mountain bike can be modified for use in this application with a downsized frame and smaller wheels. Front suspension is not required but should be considered if you want to experience the smoothest ride possible.
There are several modified BMX frames that have been created with an eye to satisfying the average dirt jumper. The top tube on these bikes will be elongated in an effort to shift more of the weight to an area above the rear wheel. With this setup it is easier to execute wheelies and ollies. Further weight balance is provided by the shorter chainstay that can be found on this model. Wide wheels with treads are used on this model and a low PSI is recommended to absorb more shock on the hard landings.
Standards for manufacturers are practically non existent since this sport is still relatively new to the biking industry. Designers instead are making up the rules as they go along and many people are doing their own modifications since they are unable to find exactly what they want. As the sport continues to grow in popularity, the industry will slowly but surely catch up with demand. Surely it will not be too long before you will be able to find jump bikes on sale in bike shops everywhere you look.
