A typical kitchen backsplash is usually designed for function. The duty of the backsplash is to keep “splashes” from getting onto the wall and running down the back of the cabinets. It is also there to protect the wall from pots and pans that might otherwise get slammed into it. We will discuss some unique ways to redesign or update that old boring backsplash with a new creative one.

Tile

Tiles are the remodelers paint brushes and a surface such as the backsplash is the canvas. With so many different types of tile a person can really infuse their own style onto any household surface. Tile work can be a complicated mural that uses tiny pieces of tile to create a bigger picture. It can also be a mosaic of different shades and tints of a color arranged in various patterns. The creativity is really only limited by the designers imagination. The backsplash is typically not a very big area so using small to medium sized tiles is best. The tile that anyone can use could either have patterns or a solid color printed on each kitchen tile.

Panels

Another creative way to update an old kitchen backsplash that works especially well is by using replaceable panels. These panels can either be copper, tin, stainless steel, wood, plexiglass, plastic, or laminate. The great thing about getting replaceable panels is the fact that they can be removed. Tile backsplashes are more permanent fixtures but with panels if they get damaged or the home owner wants a new design it can be done. When using metal panels it can be fun to use magnetic letters to leave little notes for the family. With plexiglass panels a designer can actually cover a piece of plywood with wallpaper, artwork or stickers and then place the plexiglass panel on the front.

Designing a kitchen doesn’t just have to be about function. There are millions of creative ideas that can add little touches to an otherwise stale kitchen. These little touches will allow the designer to infuse their own creativity into their kitchen as well. The most important thing is to just have fun with it and to be proud of the work that has gone into the project to make the kitchen unique.
