Side Effects From Not Sleeping

A person needs sufficient sleep in order to function properly and achieve total mental and physical well-being. At least 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep rejuvenates the brain from the day’s work and activities.

Lack of sleep or sleep deprivation is a condition of not having enough sleep, which may either be chronic or acute. Chronic sleep deprivation can cause fatigue, daytime sleepiness, clumsiness and weight loss or weight gain. Lack of sleep may be harmful to the brain and the cognitive function of the individual such as depression and mental disorders.

Lack of sleep side effects may be categorized into the following:

  • Physical side effects including headache, blurred vision, dizziness and nausea. It could also weaken the immune system causing the person to be susceptible to colds, influenza, and other infections.
  • Mental side effects including irritability, stress and anxiety. It can also cause a person to lose focus and concentration, mental confusion and memory loss.
  • A person may look haggard. Dark circles and eye bags appear making him or her look older and tired.
  • Impaired brain activity to learn, causing stutters and having difficulty in making decisions.
  • Danger in becoming prone to accidents and injuries due to lack of eye and hand coordination and slower motor skills.

Generally, lack of sleep may result to aching muscles, confusion and memory loss, depression, hallucinations, hand tremors, headaches, blood shot eyes, eye bags or periorbital puffiness, increased blood pressure, increased stress hormone levels, increased risk of diabetes, muscle and connective tissue pain, rapid involuntary rhythmic eye movement, obesity, temper tantrums (mostly in children) and yawning.
