How to Find a Student Laptop
Being in the IT field I get asked a lot of questions. Some of the most common are from people at work who are looking for the cheapest laptops for college students and sometimes even the best laptops for college students, although what they really mean is still the cheapest. They always hate my response which is; the cheapest and the best laptops for students aren’t the same thing. You’re going to have to spend at least a little bit to get something decent enough for a college student.
College students need laptops that work well without problems and from multiple locations. Even doing things like hopping on different wireless networks needs to be simple. Spending an hour with tech support on a simple issue is not something a student has time for. It’s best not to skimp on such a valuable tool.
But I Want A Cheap Laptop
Everyone wants to spend as little as possible and get as much as possible. Not just with laptops, but with anything. It’s a common thing I see among everything in tech or even life in general. People always want to best possible product, for the cheapest possible price and it’s really frustrating. I have a little secret for people, cheaper isn’t better, especially not with laptops. Laptops for students aren’t the cheapest. If you buy a cheap laptop for college you’ll just end up replacing it sooner with another cheap laptop and then you have to deal with transferring all your data over and you’ll just end up replacing it again in a another few years.
The Apple Macbook
It amazes me how many people who ask me about college laptops never even check out Apple and their Macbook or Macbook Pro. It might be different for me because we actually have an Apple store in my hometown, but not everyone is so lucky. Apple does do a lot to support students however and that includes them giving a decent discount to any student who wants to purchase, not only a Apple laptop, but any Apple product. The discount change from product to product, but overall they are definitely worth looking into.
If you are trying to decide if an Apple laptop is worth the extra money just go ask someone who owns one and they will almost definitely recommend Apple. You could even ask a random person in a coffee shop and they’d give you their honest opinion.
