The Value of a Social Worker
For all careers there are ups and downs, trials and tribulations. A lot of hard, dirty work that gets no recognition. Sometimes there is good pay and other times there is not. Being a social worker is no different. At times a worker will make connections with clients, helping them grow and overcome… only to see them fall back into the habits and lifestyle they were seeking help from. This is the life of a social worker.
It is important that we look at the truth of the situation. There are many misconceptions about being a social worker that are amongst us. The first one is that not all social workers are constantly working in the ditches. Dealing with the worst of the worst that we have in our human race. Some people choose to work here, but this is mainly because they love working in this type of environment. Those that work with a lot of stress and low pay really like what they do. However, it is only a small percentage of social workers. Many…and I mean the majority of social workers have comparable pay to other industries and work in areas that fulfill them.
There is also a ton of value in being and working as a social worker. They are special people that work constantly to help create a better world and do a great job at it. What many people do not see, what people are missing is the positive change that social workers get to actively participate in. Social workers go a long way to actively create and build relationships with their clients. These are not just professional relationships. They actually have to get involved with a client, their friends and their families many times. When they do this they create close relationships. When a client changes his or her life for the better because of the social worker, it is extremely fulfilling. This is the value that social workers bring to this world, creating a better place for all of us.
