Mobile SMTP – Email on the Go
For years now, I’ve really enjoyed all the benefits of using a laptop as my main computer. I use the same one at home and at work since I own my own company. At work, I plug it into a normal monitor, mouse and keyboard, which makes it feel just like a desktop computer. When I go on trips or am away from my office, I can enjoy using the same computer. I know where everything is. I love it.
One problem I did have with my laptop was when I’d hop on another network and try to send email. Normally, when you have a POP3 email account, you also get a setting for your SMTP server. SMTP stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol and it’s your outgoing mail server or it’s sometimes called your sending email server. This is usually connected with either the account provider or else with whatever network or ISP (Internet Service Provider) that you’re using. Having the right email server settings in your email program is important or it doesn’t work.
As you go to a coffee shop or use someone else’s network, that ISP usually provides you an SMTP sending server since you’re using their network. One problem lately has been spammers, so access to these free SMTP servers has really shrunk down and today, you need to provide your own SMTP server no matter what network you happen to be on. So it’s time to get a mobile SMTP server.
What is Mobile SMTP?
Basically, it’s your own that you can use on any network. You can either download and run your own or get a mobile SMTP service.
If you want to try to run your own, you may run into some problems. First, you may have to run it on a non-standard port – a port other than 25. That’s easy to change and work around. Second, a bigger problem is that people that you send email to may have their incoming email servers see your email as spam or junk email since your own SMTP server doesn’t look like a known sender. Many spammers use their own SMTP servers, so incoming email servers know what they look like. Third, it may be against the terms of your network to run your own SMTP server. When spammers use this practice, it can put the ISP that they’re using on a blacklist. So many Internet Service Providers do not want you using your own SMTP server.
You may run into similar problems if you try to use an open SMTP server, free SMTP servers or public SMTP servers. You could look like a spammer, your email could not go through and worse yet, your email address could get blacklisted.
Get a Mobile SMTP Service
This is probably the best way to go. With mobile SMTP, you basically put the settings in once and you’re done. You don’t have to keep changing your SMTP server and it works from any network – even if the network blocks port 25 for sending email.
More benefits of using mobile SMTP include:
- You can use your same email address anywhere. There’s no need to change it or go to a free email account when you are on the road. This keeps things neat and organized for you.
- Email is not delayed. Your emails get sent right away and are not held or delayed. You’re using a reliable SMTP server that’s set up to handle mobile users like yourself.
- No more “Relaying Denied” error messages when you hop on another network. Relieve the headaches of sending email by using a service made for what you need to do.
- Avoid getting blacklisted. If you use the right mobile SMTP service, then you’ll find one that has relationships with major email providers where they work to keep your email address off of the email blacklists. This way, you don’t ever look like a spammer or have all of the problems associated with looking like you send spam email. Your email messages get through.
The one I use is SMTP2Go.com and it works really well. There are no delays, email gets sent quickly, it’s very reliable, easy to set up and reasonably priced. That’s why I endorse it here and am writing about it. I’m a user and am really happy with their service. They have accounts for single users or you can get corporate accounts. With SMTP2Go, you’ll avoid the problems of a free SMTP server and you can simply and easily go about sending email from anywhere without problems. It’s really a no-brainer if you ask me.
I’ve learned some important things in life. One is that you get what you pay for. Free is often more expensive. You may think you’re saving money with something cheaper but if you really look at it, you’re not – you’re losing money. You want things that are reliable, don’t cause stress or headaches and work well. It’s worth a few dollars a month to get a mobile SMTP service that you don’t have to worry or even think about.
