How to Negotiate for a Used Car

Written by Original Source | Posted in Automotive

I worked for a car dealership in the repair department for several years. During that time I was able to observe how the salesmen treated customers and the tricks they used to get people into cars they really didn’t want or need but gave the salesman a bigger commission. One thing I learned is most salesmen are easy to beat in the negotiate game as long as you understand their tactics.

For example, they are going to try to learn everything they can about you so they can use that information to build a bond. They know the only way to manipulate you into doing what they want is to change your focus from trepidation at what they say to one of trust. Do not offer any information other than the make and model of the car you are looking for. You are not at the car lot to make friends, you are there to get the best deal possible.

Never fall in love with a car. Remember, no matter how much you like the particular auto there are many more available cars just like it you can find. Once the sales person senses you think you can’t live without the vehicle, they are like sharks with the scent of blood. There is nothing they won’t do to bring home the sale. So always act uncommitted to whatever car you are dealing on.

Along with this, you must be able to stand up and walk away from the table if you want a good deal. It is amazing how motivated a car dealer will get when they think you are walking out the door. Suddenly they have all kinds of deals and more ways to decrease the cost to you. Believe me it works, you should always stand up and start to walk out at least once during any car negotiation.

Lastly, don’t get sidetracked into talking about monthly payments. You are only interested in the bottom line cost of the automobile. The dealers know they can get several hundred or thousand dollars more if they give you the payment you want but then extend the contract another year.
