Perfect EDC – Benchmade Mini-Griptilian
I have carried a Benchmade Mini-Griptilian 555 HG. The 555HG features a hollowground blade (hence the HG) and round thumb-hole openers. They can be found in many colors, I have the blue one, and it’s a very beautiful knife. The light blue color (almost like a baby-blue) has more advantages than its looks. When you draw a tactical knife, black tanto blade you will get angry looks, the blue color makes the knife look more friendly. Instead of suspicious looks, I always get compliments and people ask about it’s price and where they can get one.
The handle
The handle is made of Noryl GTX, an extremely chemically resistant material with the stiffness, impact resistance and heat performance unmatched by other fancy polymer stuff on the market. It is also 25% lighter than other glass or mineral filled resins.
Stats
The knife features a 2.91 inch long, 0.1 inch thick, blade. It uses 154CM stainless steel at a 58-61 HRC hardness. The 154CM steel is an American made premium grade stainless steel that combines carbon, chromium and molybdenum. It is harder to sharpen than other steels I have, but it holds an edge forever. It offers good all-around qualities, with great corrosion resistance.
The size of the Benchmade Mini-Grip is 3.87 inch when closed, and 6.78 inch when opened. It is a perfect fit for my hand. And a perfect EDC knife because it’s lightweight (2.56 oz), easy to carry (reversible clip) and it won’t rust on you.
AXIS Lock
The axis-lock is where the fun begins. A locking mechanism exclusive to Benchmade knives. It’s very strong and so much fun to flick the knife open and closed. I have played with the axis-lock on this knife for more than 2000 times, and it still feels like out-of-the-box. I haven’t heard any complaints either. Quality engineering! Axis gets its function from a spring-loaded bar that rides forward and back in a slot machined into both liners. The bar extend to both sides of the knife. It engages a ramped notch cut into the tang portion of the knife blade when it is opened.
Conclusion
On of my favorite pocket knives in my collection. Perfect weight, premium materials and the most fun locking mechanism on the market: the axis lock. This knife is a must-buy for anyone who knows what EDC stands for. EDC stands for Every Day Carry. Now you know!
