Pleated Mini Skirts
Mini Skirt
In the 1960s pleated mini skirts were the height of fashion. The pleated mini skirts were not really worn by many until 1966 and not worn nationwide until 1967. In the 1920s many clothes often looked like clothes worn in the late 1950s. The straight shift mini dress was still worn below the knee.
Pleated Miniskirts and Short Mini Skirts
For the first part of the 1960s most pleated mini skirts were worn on the hip with short sleeved over shirts which were cut like the shell tops of today. Straight skirts were another fashion trend of the sixties. These skirts had pleats in the front and the back. These pleats were called kick pleats and were great for dancing because they allowed the legs and knees to move very freely. Straight sweater dresses called Orlon were worn with belts with tight waists and they were another huge fashion trend of the sixties.
Pencil skirts were still worn with either sweaters or cardigans that had been pressed very flat. Before the tumble driers were even invented, many women put their washed knitwear on the floor in paper tissue and put it down to dry under a carpet for two or more days. When the knitwear was removed from the tissue, the footsteps that had gone over the clothing the knitwear looked good as new. Laundering of delicates could still be a problem, but everything changed when the synthetic garments arrived.
By 1966. short waist mini skirts were worn at least six inches above the knee. London girls found these mini skirts unique and were very willing to wear them. The new fashion trend caught on because it was so unique. You had to be young to get away wearing an outfit that was so controversial.
The Miniskirt
The decade of the 1960s signaled a lot of change. It was a very fast moving decade in everything from fashion to relationships. Manufacturers of the miniskirt were soon to become famous for their invention. The mini skirt was a huge icon of the 1960′s. Within less than a year the shorter length was well established with the under twenties group and soon after that many older women also began wearing short mini skirts.
Pleated Mini Skirts Today
Skirts With Pleats
We’re seeing the pleated mini skirt make a comeback today for sure. Girls in their teens and twenties wear them – either as part of their normal outfit or else when they go out at night. The definition of “mini” is also called into question today. Basically, any skirt over the knee can be considered to be a mini skirt. There are varying lengths and wearing one will depend on your body type. Some popular styles are:
- White Pleated Mini Skirts
- Tennis Skirts
- Plaid Skirts / Plaid Pleated Mini Skirt
Some girls are taller or have longer legs, so since the skirt comes down from the hips and waist, how much leg you show will depend on your legs. Do some measuring and find a skirt length that you’re comfortable with and then go and get one of today’s hot, pleated miniskirts.

Pleated skirts are so reminiscent of the blue skirts worn in my private school, elementary through mid school except the mini‘s were, of course, not allowed. These pleated skirts were below the knee, hot in terms of temperature and having to wear them for so many years makes them unappealing, at least in blue plaid!
