Before the advent of digital cameras, people had to deal with film-based cameras, where a lot of expertise is needed in order to come up with good pictures. For one, the view is limited to a very small square that is even smaller than the area covered by the eye. With DSLRs, one needs to be able to control the amount of light by choosing the correct settings, among other complicated instructions. Thus, if one does not know how to use a DSLR, the outcome might be worse than those taken from the point and shoot types.
