Starting a Snow Removal Business

Written by T.C. | Posted in Business

You can start a lot of businesses up in this economy, and some of them will survive, but one business that is sure to survive winter after winter is a snow plowing business. The overhead cost on these types of companies is extremely low when compared to retail establishments, or other types of business, and you can keep your employee base down to one single person if you wish to do so. The best part is that you can expand this type of operation across the country, wherever snow and ice build up on the roads over the winter. You are going to want to make sure that you stand a chance to make some money though, and not get the work only 1 month a year.

The costs associated with a snow plowing business are often minimal, requiring only yourself and a good truck with a plow. The truck does have to be heavier duty, with some beefy tires on it, and possibly even chains. You are also going to want a strong engine to help you ensure that you are going to make it through the winter, without having any mechanical issues. These trucks go through extreme abuse, so spending the time and money to ensure you purchase a solid truck is going to be the best investment you can make in this type of operation.

As for employees, you really don’t have to hire anyone but yourself to run the operation. While hiring more people does allow you to earn more money, it also increases your liability and the exposure that you have. If someone on your crew messes up, or makes a fatal mistake you are going to be held liable for it. For this reason alone, you are going to want to judge the market for your business, compared to the rates for insurance premiums to decide whether or not it is worth it to hire a few more employees.

Above all of this, you are going to want to make sure that you can work for more than one month a year. As you get closer to the south, the roads tend to de-ice themselves, as well as not staying frozen for long enough to require the services of a plowing company. If you are in the northern states however, the roads can freeze for 3-4 months out of the year, giving you ample time to earn a substantial income.
