There are a few measures that you can take when moving in to a new rental apartment to ensure safety is not compromised. The first thing to do is check with the landlord that they have in fact changed the locks since the last tenant moved out. This safe guards you against ex tenants having spare sets of keys with which they could enter your home. If for any reason you think that the locks have not been changed, you should change them yourself. This may seem like an unnecessary expense but it will be worth it, even just for peace of mind.

Another thing you could look at to maximize security is to install a new apartment alarm system. Up until the introduction of wireless technology, companies would be less inclined to install burglar alarm systems into apartments as holes would need to be drilled which could damage the property and landlords where not always keen. An alarm is obviously not the be all and end all of rental apartment security. Basic concepts such as locking doors and windows should not be ignored and being a member of the community looking out for each other should never be underestimated. Obviously, if you have an alarm fitted then you must remember to turn it on when leaving the house because no matter how state of the art it is, if it’s not on, it won’t work!
