Can I Replace my iPhone Battery Myself?
If your iPhone isn’t holding a charge for very long, then it’s probably time to change out the battery. Getting a new battery in there will bring new life to your phone and the charges will hold much longer – just as if it was new again!
If you’re wondering, “Can an iPhone battery be replaced?” then the answer is yes. You can either have Apple do it or you can do it yourself.
Apple Battery Replacement by Apple is an Option
Apple does have a battery replacement service but you have to pay for it. Apple says:
Your battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles. The one-year warranty includes service coverage for a defective battery. If it is out of warranty, Apple offers a battery service for $79, plus $6.95 shipping, subject to local tax.
The downside is that you have to send your phone in and that means you’ll be without it – maybe a week or more. So this isn’t really a good option for most people.
To get around that, you can take advantage of Apple Store iPhone battery replacement, which is where you take your phone to an Apple Store and they give you a loaner iPhone to use while the battery in yours is being replaced. It’s not a replacement iPhone but just a loaner. Your phone must be under warranty, which is just 1 year usually.
If you do want Apple to replace the battery on your iPhone, then make sure you read over all the terms of the program and the steps you need to go through before you bring it in or send it in:

Where Can I Buy an iPhone Battery?
If you want to change the battery in your iPhone yourself, then you’ll need a new battery and you’ll need a kit.
The kit you need will depend on if you have an iPhone 4, 4s, 5 or 5s. There’s also a universal kit that covers the iPhone 4, 4S, 5, 6 and 6 Plus and you can get it on Amazon at a reasonable price:
BinTEK Cell Phone Repair Tool Kit (amazon.com)
It contains the 9 tools you’ll need to change the battery in your iPhone without damaging it. The tools are specialized and you can’t just find them at your local hardware store.
This kit covers the iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4, 4S, 5, 5C, 5S, 6 and 6 Plus.
In addition to the kit, you’ll need to get a replacement battery. A replacement li-ion polymer battery will run about $10 or so for the 3G, 3GS, 4, 4S, 5, 5C or 5S and then about $20 for the 6 and 6 Plus.
All in all, replacing the battery yourself is a good deal if you look at the pricing. The kit and battery might cost you less than $20 and then you’ll have to kit to use again if you need it, so subsequent battery replacements will only be about $10 each.
Do You Really Need a New Battery?
You can actually bring your iPhone’s battery back to life and work like new without replacing it. You can recondition the battery yourself. Yes, that’s very possible to do. If you don’t want to go through the hassle of replacing your phone battery, then read more about how to do that here:
This works for other type of batteries, too – car batteries, marine batteries, laptop batteries and more. Some people are even collecting old, “dead” batteries, then reconditioning them and selling them for a profit. Knowing this method can save you tons and you can even make money doing it.

How to Change the Battery
You’ll first want to make sure you have a good backup of your phone before attempting to do this work. Plug your phone in and run the backup using iTunes.
Then, before you get going, you’ll need to power down your phone. Make sure it completely shuts down before you start taking it apart.
To help you with the process, here’s an iPhone 4 battery replacement video that explains each step for taking the phone apart, changing the battery and then putting it all back together.
Make sure you have a good work area. Set up some lights so you can see and put a cloth down so that the screws don’t roll away. You’ll want to carefully line up screws as you take them out so that you know where they all went.
And then here’s another iPhone battery replacement video for the iPhone 5:
As you can see, the method for fixing an iPhone battery is different for the different models of phones. Make sure you watch a video for your specific model of phone before you start working on it. Getting a new phone can be expensive because the price for a new one outside of a contract is much more expensive than if you get one in a contract.
What You Can Expect
Once you’ve done this, make sure you let the battery almost completely run out before you charge it. Get it down to 5% or so and then charge it. If you can, get in the habit of running it down pretty far but that first charge will matter quite a bit, so be sure to get it down to 5% or so (9% is fine).
After that, charge it fully and try to remove the phone from the charger once it’s done. Charging your phone overnight is not really a good idea because you can over charge it. There are some apps out there you can buy, which will alert you when the charge is complete, so consider getting that or else just watch it closely.
You can expect to only have to charge your phone every other day for a while now. Again, we think this is a smart choice and you won’t regret doing it.
