How I Turned My Lifelong Digestive Issues Around

I remember my teenage years – especially Junior High and High School. Those years were tough for me. My body was changing and I didn’t know what was going on. I especially couldn’t figure out why I had so much gas. It was really embarrassing and horrible.

stomach-embarrassmentMy stomach would make strange noises (gurgling) when I didn’t need it to – like in class or in assembly meetings. Everyone would laugh at me. The teacher thought I was making the noises on purpose and got mad at me a number of times. I didn’t understand what was going on or how to take care of it.

What About Milk?

One of my theories was that milk was something pretty basic and it would calm things down, so I made sure I drank milk. Later in life I found out that I was lactose intolerant but I didn’t even know such a thing existed back then.

Luckily, it went away for a few years. I got through college without much trouble. I remember drinking plenty of milk and I wasn’t too bad. I thank God for that because I don’t know how I would have made it otherwise.

My milk intolerance came back in about 2001. It came back strong. I decided to start seeing a dietitian. She had me go on a fast for a week and I could only have rice, apple sauce, toast with a little bit of margarine and nuts. That wasn’t easy but I had no stomach problems that week. That was a relief. I remember wondering before that if these problems would or could ever go away. I really felt trapped. Knowing that there was some food out there that was safe was a huge load off of my shoulders.

She then had me introduce other foods back in and that’s when we figured out I was definitely lactose intolerant but I might also have some trouble with a few other foods like wheat. I’ve now concluded that wheat isn’t really a problem but dairy definitely is for me.

Supplements Helped Me

supplementsSince I finally figured out that milk and dairy was a problem, I started watching my diet. I started telling people I was lactose intolerant, too. I was scared to mention it at first but then realized that if it’s out there in the open and I had problems, then the problems could be explained. Telling people about it was also a load off my shoulders.

I started trying supplements like Lactaid and a few others. I found a good digestion supplement that really helped. I had to down like 4-5 of these things before a meal if I wanted relief but it was worth it. My friends saw me taking them but they knew what was going on so it was alright.

The supplements worked good but not great. It was some relief but not an acceptable amount by my standards. I remember even trying that yogurt that was supposed to help with digestion but that didn’t help much and it was embarrassing to buy it.

I started searching around some more. This time I found probiotics.

Probiotics Helped More

I found a probiotic and tried it. They had a few versions of it and I went right to the next strength up from the basic one. I think there was one more level yet. It worked. It built up and I got even more relief. After a short time, I didn’t need to take the supplements anymore but I kept some around in case I was going to a wedding or some kind of event like that and wanted to be sure my stomach stayed quiet.

A couple or maybe three years went by that I was on that probiotic. It was better than just taking supplements and it helped but not totally. I had some relief but I was always on the lookout for more relief. I then found an even better probiotic!

The Best Probiotic

Yeah, I click on one of those ads you see on websites talking about stomach issues. I figured watching a video wasn’t any harm and maybe I’d learn more things that would help me… boy, did I ever!

The probiotic I had been taking had only about 2 or 4 billion colony forming units (CFUs). This new probiotic I found has 30 billion CFUs and better strains of healthy bacteria. Cool, let’s try it! I was already on a subscription for that other one I was on and this one was stronger, so I really had nothing to lose. I placed an order for Perfect Biotics from Probiotic America.

I couldn’t wait for it to arrive. I wanted to get on it and start seeing results.

It arrived in about a week and I started taking it. After about 2 weeks, I noticed some changes. I felt less stressed, I had more energy and was even sleeping better. Alright… there must be something to this.

At about the 3-4 week mark, I noticed my skin felt amazing. It still does. I love touching my skin. It has never felt so smooth. The way I think about this is, if your skin feels better, that must be an indicator that your whole body is doing better. And I’m right – that’s what having a better amount of good bacteria in your gut does. It affects your whole body.

With digestion, I saw better results. I have less gas. I have less stomach gurgling (almost none). I’m even starting to lose a few pounds. These results might not be what everyone sees but I think there’s a good chance you’ll see them.

Current medical consensus says your gut should contain about 80% “good” bacteria… and no more than 20% “bad” bacteria. This supplement gets you there. It takes a little while but you experience health benefits on the way.

I’m in my 4th month taking Perfect Biotics and I wouldn’t give it up for anything. I feel better and I know I’m getting healthier.

Tips for Taking Perfect Biotics

Here are some tips when taking it to help it work the best:

  1. Take it once daily with food. If you take it with an empty stomach, then your stomach acids will start to eat away and degrade the potency of the bacteria. Eat a little food, then take the capsule. I take mine with breakfast.
  2. Eat more pre-biotic foods. Pre-biotics feed the good bacteria that you’re putting in. It’s fuel for the gut flora.

Prebiotics are a type of fiber found in a variety of natural foods. They’re classified as non-digestible fibers, but they actually can be digested… just not by you. They’re broken down and used for energy by the beneficial bacteria in your gut, your probiotics.

Here’s a list of pre-biotic foods:

  • Dandelion greens
  • Garlic and onions (and any vegetables in the leek family)
  • Asparagus
  • Bananas
  • Cabbage
  • Beans
  • Chicory
  • Miso
  • Legumes (lentils, chickpeas, and green peas)
  • Coconut water kefir
  • Dairy-free yogurts
  • Raw cacao
  • Kombucha
  • Kimchi
  • Sauerkraut
  • Tempeh
  • Raw wheat bran

In general, raw foods have more prebiotic fibers than cooked foods.

bananaI’ve heard that bananas are a grain and they make you fat… blah, blah, blah. Forget that. Eat bananas. The prebiotic (and fiber) benefits will trump any increase in carbohydrates that bananas have. The fiber makes you feel full, too – so you’ll snack less.

Speaking of that, there are foods that don’t help, too. In general, it’s foods with sugar and carbs. Just prebiotic foods feed your good bacteria, sugar and carbs feed your bad bacteria. This is why you feel bad and get sick – your diet has too many carbs and too much sugar in it.

Feed your good bacteria instead of your bad bacteria and you’ll be more healthy. It’s just that simple.

Since 70% of your immune system lives in your gut, you have to take care of your gut to have good health.

What You’ll Experience Taking Perfect Probiotics

There are all kinds of benefits from taking a good amount of probiotics. You really can’t take too many probiotics.

Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll experience, which is what I’m also seeing:

  • Weeks 1-2: Improved digestion, less gas, less bloating, increased energy.
  • Weeks 2-3: Improved mood, reduced anxiety.
  • Weeks 3-4: Improved skin, immune system boost.
  • Weeks 4-8: Weight loss.

stomach-weight-lossIt took me a little longer to start seeing the weight loss. For me, it was at the 8-9 week mark. I was starting to think that it just wouldn’t happen for me but it finally started. If you improve your diet with more prebiotic foods, then you could start seeing that earlier.

Probiotics are not just in your gut but throughout your entire body. They account for about 3.5 pounds of your body weight. This essentially makes them a significant “organ” of your body.

Probiotics make up 70-80% of your immune system. Having good bacteria in your body will help fight bad bacteria and help fight super bugs.

In addition to bacteria, probiotics also include certain yeasts which help you digest sugar and starch. Both bacteria and yeasts are considered probiotics because they thrive in your gut and provide you with digestive and immune benefits. (source: probioticamerica.com)

Conclusion – Live Better Already

Seriously… what do you have to lose here? What are you without your health?

Probiotics control your health. It’s basically just taking a pill… how hard is that?

It’s more than just a pill though – it’s giving your body what it needs, naturally.

Things like weight loss are a symptom – a symptom of a bigger problem. Why spend time and money treating the symptom when you can instead treat the actual problem?

Take a step in the right direction and try probiotics. I suggest Perfect Biotics by Probiotics America.
